This research takes Italian poplar for object of study, which is planted generally around DongTing Lake in the southern of China. For the poor quality timber, we use physical treating technology according with environmental protection claims to make heat-pressing strengthening treatment, and explore a new way to make thoroughgoing timber processing and create high value-added products with the poor quality timber instead of the natural forestry. In this research, we conduct three stage experiment such as heat-water soften processing, heat-pressing, heat-treating etc., and study the influence of the different technological parameter on compressed poplar. These influence factors of the experiment embrace temperature, water ratio, time, compression ratio and pressure etc.; we explore the influences of these factors on the operating characteristic of timber. By heat-water softening experiment, based on comparison of two heat-water softening method, including water-boiling and steaming, the conclusion can be drawn: steaming method is superior to water-boiling method on the appearance and property of the compressed timber. And the specimens of the steaming softening treatment can achieve the better softening effect, the restoration ratio of the compressed specimens will be lower and physical and mechanical properties will also be higher if the original water ratio of the specimens is percent 15 or so, the temperature is between 125 centigrade and 130 centigrade and softening time is about 60 minutes. By heat-pressing treatment experiment, it indicates that every physical mechanics property of the compressed specimens is fairly good, there is a marked drop in the restoration ratio and the hardness and the flexural properties is enhanced if heat-pressing temperature is between 180 centigrade and 200 centigrade, pressure is between 3MPa and 4MPa, press speed is 0.01mm/s and compression ratio is percent 60. By heat-treating experiment of compressed timber, it demonstrates that, with the elongation of heat-treating time, the hygroscopic ratio and swelling ratio of the specimens will be reduced, the size of the specimens is comparatively stable and the better mechanical properties of the specimens will also be maintained if heat-treating temperature is stable in 180 centigrade or so and heat-treating time is smaller than 20 hours. After heat-treating, the appearance color of the timber becomes darker and deeper and heavy sense is enhanced. By means of the above experiments, the conclusion can be drawn: it is practicable that the timber properties of the fast-growing wood is improved by applying physical treatment technology to make heat-pressing strengthening, and the compressed poplar can replace some high-quality natural timber and it can enlarge the application range of the poplar which is an artificial forestry.
