In this paper, online detection of crack damage for a cantilever laminated composite cylindrical shell is studied by using Genetic Algorithms (GAs).First, the finite element dynamic models of the cantilever intact and damaged laminated composite cylindrical shells are established. The piezoelectric smart materials bonded on the laminated composite shell are used as both actuator and sensor. Introducing crack damage into shell FEM model, variations of physical parameters due to crack are discussed. The dynamic response signals are calculated.Second, by taking correlation coefficients as the criterion that measures the correlation between dynamic response signal of intact shell and damaged shells, GAs is used to find the damage case that has the same dynamic response signal with the needing identification damage case. When such a case is found, the damage detection is achieved by taking this case as the detection result. At last, the compute workload of crack damage detection for a cantilever laminated composite cylindrical shell by using GAs is analyzed. The result shows that GAs can get the damage information efficiently. The analysis also shows that some character of GAs will make it superb in the problem of damage detection of large structure or multi-damage detection. Moreover, the distribution functions of the GAs characters such as iterated time is found. Furthermore, the expected compute workload of damage detection in a new structure can be quickly acquired using this function. The results presented in this paper are useful for the future study of using GAs in damage detection.
