Wurtzite ZnO nanoparticles have been prepared via the polyol process starting from a solution of znic acetate with ethylene glycol and ethylene glycol/water. The influence of reaction conditions and the addition of water on the microstructure of the obtained ZnO were investigated. The structure and morphology of the obtained powder was characterized by means of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The ultraviolet property of the reaction system were analyzed using UV-vis spectrophotometer. The results indicate that the obtained spherical ZnO nanoparticles have a monodisperse diameter range from 10 to 15nm. With the addition of small amount water, the diameter increased and the shape changed. Cone and teardrop-shaped ZnO nanocrystals have been obtained through the control of adding ways of water. The reaction mechanic was discussed on the basis of experiment results and reasonably explains the effect of water on the control of microstructure of ZnO nanocrystals.Cobalt nanocrystals have been obtained because of the reductive property of ethylene glycol using cobalt acetate tetrahydrate salt as cobalt source. The influence of the mount of added NaOH, reaction conditions, the ways of calcinations and the effect of polymer on the microstructure of Co nanocrystals were investigated. In addition, the crystallinity of Co nanocrystals prepared by microwave method shows stronger than the sample obtained form regular reflux reaction.
