Metal nickel and its composite nanopowders, such as nickel-copper and nickel-copper-boron composite powders, were prepared by liquid chemical reduction methods. Some predominant factors in the synthesis process were studied.Microstrucfure of the powder samples achieved such as crystallographic structure, grain size, particle morphology, element analysis and thermal decomposition were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy and differential thermal analyzer etc. The results indicated that the samples prepared, which are spherical or spherical-like, have distributing of granularity, with the average grain size from 40nm to 60nm.According to the results of DTA, we got the catalytic characteristics of the three nanopowders on the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate and the AP/HTPB propellant samples. Ni and NiCu, NiCuB composite nanopowders are all have preferable catalytic characteristics on the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate and the propellant samples, and could make the peak temperature of the thermal decomposition decrease differently. The analysis indicated that NiCuB powder sample had the best catalytic characteristics, and NiCu inferior.
