Pulverized coal combustion generates significant quantities of nitrogen oxides (NOX), which is a major source of air pollution. For environmental protection it is necessary to minimize the quantities of nitrogen oxides and study the theory of nitrogen oxides formation during pulverized coal burning. The mechanisms affecting the structures of nitrogen-containing compounds during pyrolysis and burning processes are not well understood, especially for a complicated fuel like coal. This paper studied the release behavior of nitrogen-containing compounds during pyrolysis with a fixed-bed quartz reactor for ten coals: 4 kind of blind coals, 4 kind of soft coals, and 2 kind of coal water slurry. Coal composition, pyrolysis temperature residence times, and different atmosphere all is the affecting factors of nitrogen release behavior during pyrolysis. To the all factors, we have studied in the third chapter of this paper. At the same time, six coals during the ten coals have been burned under different temperature and different air ratio , studying the effects of temperature, coal type, air ratio, and the distribution of nitrogen after pyrolysis on the characteristics of NO formation in the fixed-bed quartz reactor.
