In this thesis, nanosized silica was modified by esterification under the general reflux and the microwave irradiation method respectively and its nylon 6 nanocomposites were prepared by in situ polymerization. The structure and characteristics of modified silica and its nanocomposites were studied by contact angle, viscosity, FT-IR, XRD, TEM, DSC, TG, XPS et al. The results indicated that esterification increased hydrolytic stability of silica and it was observed to possess improved dispersion behavior and adhesion with polymer. Compared with the general reflux method, the microwave irradiation method has the merits of promoting the reaction and increasing the grafting rate. The nanocomposites possessed changed structure and properties with different contents of additive. Compared with nylon 6, the nanocomposites possessed desired property, such as increased thermal stability.
