Compatibility of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used in clinic practice for a long time, and it is the essence of TCM theory. Its chemical analysis and quality control has become the important domains in the modernization research on TCM foundation theory. The peculiarities of TCM are its complexity, variety and entirety, and it is a complex "gray system". Therefore, it is hard to explain the property of the TCM only by analyzing single or a few components in it. The curative effect of TCM comes from the cooperative action of its multi-component.In this paper, Chemometrics-a powerful tool of analytical chemistry has been adopted for analyzing the two - dimension data produced by high performance liquid chromatography coupled with ultraviolet spectroscopy ( Diode-Array-Detector, HPLC-DAD ) to identify components in the compounds of TCM. The study on TCM-astragalus's root, Chinese angelica root and the compound (Danggui Buxue Tang) consisted by them as an example of the method for separation and recognition of the characteristic components and fingerprint analysis has been introduced. The basal principles of discrimination for fingerprint differences about different compatibilities of TCM compounds and its direction effect to the quality control of the production process of TCM have been described by the factor and cluster analyses. The resultsindicate that there is no vanishment of the main components in the Danggui Buxue Tang, and there are just the diversifications of some component contents, which reflect the cooperative effect in TCM theory from a side face.
