The use of intumescent fire retardant [IFR] additives is a promising technique, particularly in the area of non-halogen flame retardant polymers. This thesis deals with LDPE which is difficult to be fire-retarded by IFR. The effects of factors such as proportion of acid source (ammonium polyphosphate [APP]) and char source (pentaerythritol [PER] or dipentaerythritol [DPER]), type and amount of zeolite [ZEO] as IFR promoter on the fireproofing performances are studied. The interaction and mechanism among LDPE, IFR (APP/PER or APP/DPER) and the promoter ZEO are discussed by using TGA-DTA analysis. The relationship between fire-proofing performance and thermal degradation behavior are also studied. By the employment of theory of optimal experiments, mathematics model of four variables of LOI and the amounts of APP, DPER, ZEO is established; the LOI of IFR-LDPE is increased to 29.5 by the adduct of optimal formulation obtained by optimal calculation. Fire-proofing performances of the IFR-LDPE material are overall appraised from heat release, smoke release, effective heat of combustion, specific extinction area and mass loss provided by Cone calorimetry.
