The casting process design of large-sized engine blocks made from ductile iron for locomotives is presented and the production feasibility is analyzed in the article. The casting process description is very detailed and complete, it includes designing every casting procedure, coremaking production line, positioning cores in three dimensional directions, selecting casting process parameters, selecting the parting line, deciding the pouring position and pouring basin, designing flasks and core boxes, selecting matched equipments with the block casting process in resin-bonded sand and so on. The practical experiences in DaLian Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works indicate that the casting process can meet the production program on which 400 engine blocks are produced per year according to the standards in the middle of nineties of last century in the world. The author and his partner developed the practical and productive casting process. The large-sized engine blocks for locomotives made in the casting process come up to the designer' s specifications and are serving for the locomotives in Chinese railway with excellent performance, because of its sound internal quality, finishing surfaces and the casting dimension tolerances CT8-9 in the Chinese standard GB6414-86 and weight tolerances MT8 in Chinese standard GB/T11351-89.
