Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is one of the most important machining methods in mold and die manufacture, which is to form a 3D female cavity in work piece by making a corresponding male shaped tool (electrode) and plunging it into the work piece. In EDM, in order to improve the surface quality of the cavity, decrease electrode end wear and increase cutting speed, electrode revolves in a prescribed orbit. However, electrode orbiting brings error in geometrical form to EDM, and it's difficult to reduce the error because of its complexity. At present, making repairs and supply supplying replacements to electrode and mold by hand is taken to resolve this problem. Although this method can reduce the error to some degree, it can't ensure the stability of the machining quality and prolongs production cycle. In mold cavity manufacturing, at first a 3D product model is built, then produce Numerical Control code which is used to manufacture electrode in NC machine. Finally, mold cavity is eroded with the electrode in electrical discharge machine. We can deal with one of step in this cavity manufacturing process. After analysis, we chose the method of dealing with NC code to reduce the manufacture error caused by electrode orbit in EDM. According to the orbit type and orbit radius of electrode, we modify the NC code which is used to machine electrode, and generate the new one which has the same format with the old one and can be used to machine electrode too.Based on this method, we built a software system to automatically modify NC code and generate new one. We also made experiment to verify the veracity and reliability of the method. Experiment shows that the method can effectively reduce the error, and obviously improve machining precision in EDM and keep the stability of manufacture quality.
