The Mu Us sandy land and the Otindag sand land are two famous sandy lands in China. Target at improving techniques of aerial seeding for vegetation restoration, the effects of water supply and sand burial on the germination and seedling emergence of main species used in aerial seeding in Ordos plateau was studied. In recent years, the desertification in Otindag sandy land developed rapidly, main reasons for desertification were analyzed.Hedysarum leave Maxim, Caragana korshinskii Kom, Artemisia sphaerocephala Krasch and Artemisia ordosica Krasch are four dominant species, and they are often used as main species in aerial seeding in Ordos Plateau. The germination and seedling emergence characters of the four species under different water supply and burial depth were studied. The optimal amount of water supply is close to the mean precipitation of one month during germination season in Ordos Plateau (50mm/month), the optimal burial depth is 0.5-lcm, the optimal burial depth for H. leave, C. korshinskii, A. sphaerocephala and A. ordosica is 0.5, 1, 0.5 and 0.5cm, respectively. Redundant water and too deep burial will reduce the seedling emergence. This reflected the adaptation of the plants to the local climate and environment. Based on the results of the experiment and the characters of climate and environment in local area, it is suggested that the time of aerial seeding be advanced to middle or late May from early June in order to enhance the emergence percentage of the seedlings.Otindag sand land expands and degrades rapidly in recent years. We analyzed the natural and social factors of Zhenglan banner, which lies in the center of Otindag to investigate its reason. Based on our analysis, overgrazing and dramatic increase of the population are the main reasons for rapid increment of desertification in Zhenglan Banner.
