This dissertation includes five chapters. The first chapter introduced the basic properties of samarium element and made a brief review of the application of samarium diiodide in the organic synthetic methodology in recent years. It recounted the aldehydes and ketones reactions prompted by samarium diiodide with halo-substituted compounds, unsaturated alkanes and nitro- substituted compounds. And the reactions involving halo-, cyano- compounds only which promped by Samarium diiodide are also concluded in this part. We also made a minireview on the use in organic synthetic reactions of trivalent samarium reagents and the samarium metal or that being assisted by different reagents. The second chapter reviewed the recented research works about the Friedel-Crafts reaction. The asymmetric Friedel-Crafts reaction was detailed first and then the ionic liquid supported Friedel-Crafts reactions which the latest papers reported. In the third chapter we concluded our work done in the past year which made the use of samarium triiodide to catalyze the Friedel-Crafts reaction. The forth chapter introduced my recent work on the selective reduction of multicarbonyl compounds which prompted by samarium diiodide. The fifth chapter detailed our synthetic work related to the total synthesis of Verapamil.
