The semi-solid alloy Al-Si-Cu-Mg was investigated for its wide range ofliquid-solid coexistence in this work. The deforming characteristic and theforming process of semi-solid aluminum alloy were investigated by means ofexperiment and numerical simulation. The results could provide guidance toforming technology of semi-solid aluminum alloy in engineering applications. The stress and strain of the semi-solid alloy Al-Si-Cu-Mg were tested usingthe machine of Gleeble-1500.The influences of deforming velocity, thedeforming extent and the deforming temperature on the deforming characteristicof the semi-solid aluminum alloy were analyzed. The apparent viscosity equationwas selected according as the deforming characteristic of the semi-solidaluminum alloy. The apparent viscosity equations were calculated by C++ language andselected according as the deforming characteristic of the semi-solid aluminumalloy. The pouring system of thixoforming was designed based on the energyconservation and the quality cortrolling principle. The optimal section of theinner meatus, filling velocity and filling time were obtained. The filling simulation of the semi-solid aluminum alloy coupled with theapparent viscosity equation was investigated. The filling velocity and pressurewere used as boundary conditions. The flowing and filling characteristics of thesemi-solid aluminum alloy were compared with the liquid aluminum alloy. Thetwo representative semi-solid aluminum casts were simulated. The resultsindicated that the filling process of semi-solid aluminum alloy is steady. And thelaminar-flow characteristic of semi-solid aluminum alloy is validated, whichavails to the semi-solid forming quality.
