1 -Aminoanthraquinone is important as an intermediate for anthraquinone disperse dyes, vat dyes and pigments, and it is known that there are various methods for producing it. For example, anthraquinone is nitrated with mixed acid and then reacted with ammonia or reduced with alkali sulfide, 1 -Aminoanthraquinone thus obtained is difficult to purify. This paper has studied a novel process for producing high purity 1-Aminoanthraquinone from 1-nitronaphthalene as a starting material. More specifically it relates to a process for oxidizing 1-nitronaphthalene in the liquid phase with an acidic aqueous solution containing a ceric ion which is regenerated from the recovered cerous ions by air oxidation. This paper have also studied another method to synthesize 1-Aminoanthraquinone which comprises a step of subjecting the 5-nitro-1,4.4a,9a-tetrahydroanthraquinone-10-oxime obtained in Diels- Alder reaction in DMF—HCl solution.
