With economic development and the quickening of urbanization, the depravation of enviromental quality has become an important public issue. The lack of water resources has been a severe challenge for our government in the twenty first century. Both domestic and overseas experience has shown that the reclamation and reuse of urban wastewater was an effective means of resolving the wastewater problem, ameliorating environmental concerns, and addressing the issue seeking out new water resourses. At the present time there is considerable public focus on security issues relating to reclaimed water. Bioaccumulation, carcinogenicity, teratogenecity, mutagenesis, and chronic toxicity of trace, poisonous organic contamination make the research of assessing the ecological safety and health risk of these materials a top project in the field of environmental sciences. This paper investigates the presence of trace , poisonous organic pollutants in different treatment stages of the waterworks in two sewage treatment plants and in the water entering into the North of China. We dissuss the efficiency of the removal of organic pollutants from a typical wastewater treatment process currently being used, and evaluate the security of the output water of two treatment plants. First, I analysed the trace, poisonous organic contamination, both qualitatively and quantitatively, by mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and gas chromatography, using an electron capture detector(GC/μ-ECD). Second, I tested the integrative toxicity by biological methods. The estrogenic effect and the dioxin-like effect of the water samples and sedimentation samples were evaluated by using the 7-Ethoxyresorufin-O-Diehthylase (EROD) assay, and recombinant yeast assay. Finally, I compared the result by chemical and biological methods of two advanced treatment procedures in two wastewater treatment plants. I hope to establish the evaluative system of reclaimed wastewater and criterion. Results indicated that : (1) the preferable relativity of ETEQ by GC-MS and EROD, r is 0.9;(2)the efficiencyof the removal of organic pollutants from routine treatment stages have some effect, but the typical wastewater treatment stages are evident effect, in the same order of magnitude as compared to the world. the effluent of lime and the concretetreatment procedures used met or exceeded the standards set by our country.
