Ultrasonic irradiation was employed to initiate the microemulsion polymerization of styrene. The effect factors on the polymerization conversion and the molecular weight of polystyrene were studied. The determination of the conversion of styrene with UV spectroscopy was also studied in microemulsion polymerization induced by ultrasound.1. The microemulsion polymerization of styrene induced by ultrasoundUltrasonically induced microemusion polymerization of styrene in the absence of a conventional initiator was successfully performed. The effects of the initial concentration of styrene, the concentration surfactant and co-surfactant, temperature, ultrasonic power and nitrogen on the conversion of polymerization were studied. The experimental results show that the conversion of polymerization is affected by the initial concentration of styrene, surfactant and co-surfactant, temperature, ultrasonic power and nitrogen. The conversion of polymerization increases with the decreasing of the concentration of styrene. With the increasing of the concentration of SDS and the decreasing of the content of pentrol, the conversion of polymerization increases. The conversion of polymerization increases with the increasing of temperature and ultrasonic power. Nitrogen has important effect on the process of polymerization. The diameters of polystyrene prepared by microemulsion polymerization of styrene induced ultrasound are around 30nm.
