The copolymerization of styrene (St) and ionic monomer sodium styrene sulfonate (NaSS) through ultrasonically initiated emulsion polymerization was studied in this paper. The surface of prepared P (St-co-NaSS) copolymer latex was modified by sulfonate functional group. Based on the interaction of sulfonate group and CdS nanoparticles, the deposition of CdS nanoparticles on the surface of P (St-co-NaSS) copolymer latex was realized, thus prepared P (St-co-NaSS)/CdS core-shell nanocomposites. The main conclusions are as follows:Using the dispersion, agitation, emulsification and initiation of ultrasound, the emulsion copolymerization of St and NaSS was realized, and the affecting factors were studied. The results showed that there were only two regions, including acceleration and deceleration region, but no constant velocity region during the polymerization process. Ionic surfactant SDS was mostly effective for both the polymerization of St and copolymerization of St and NaSS, and increasing the amount of SDS led to acceleration of polymerization. The polymerization rate decreased with increasing the amount of St, but enhanced with the addition of comonomer NaSS. The effect of temperature on the...
