In this thesis, the molecular second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties, the fluorescenceproperties as well as thermochromism properties of several kinds of Schiff bases were investigated. The context was divided into 5 chapters as below.Chapter 1: Introduced briefly the nonlinear optics, the theory and the development of organic second-order NLO materials, the basic principles and the research of fluorescence, as well as the factors that can affect fluorescent properties of fluorescent materials. The principles of thermochromism and the development and the applications of thermochromic materials were also discussed.Chapter 2: Four kinds of condensations of aromatic amine with benzaldehyde derivatives were obtained by solid phase synthesis. Their structures were identified by element analysis and ~1H NMR spectroscopy. Their SHG properties, fluorescent and thermochromic properties were also tested.Chapter 3: The microscopic and macroscopic NLO properties of these condensations of aromatic amine with benzaldehyde derivatives were studied. Based on theoretical and practical investigations of these compounds, the relationship between substituents, substituted positions and the NLO properties were obtained. The important principles for further investigation of this kind of second order NLO materials were provided. It was showed that these compounds possess large second order nonlinear optic coefficients. Meanwhile, they have high thermal stabilities and good optical transparency. So they are prominent candidate materials with second order NLO properties.Chapter 4: The effects of substituents and substituted positions to the UV, fluorescent spectroscopy and quantum yields of these schiff bases were studied in order to provide useful data to further investigations of synthesis and research on fluorescent materials. The resultsshowed that these Schiff bases have large fluorescence quantum yields.Chapter 5: The thermochromism of condensations of aromatic amine with benzaldehyde derivatives were studied. And the thermochromic mechanism of these compounds was discussed by DSC investigation.
