At present, the low longevity and poor quality of rollers seriously affect product quality and their productivity in the iron and steel industry of our nation. That' s because the rollers are made up of only one kind of material in most enterprises. The wear-resistance depends on chill layer as cast. Generally, the thicker the chill layer is, the better wear-resistant the roller can achieve, but its toughness is poor and it is easy to break. The enterprises have to sacrifice wear-resistance in order to ensure the roller not to rupture.The trend of roller development is to compound different kinds of metals together to form rollers. The surface of these rollers is made up of wear resistance materials which ensure the rollers have high wear-resisting property. The inside of roller is tough materials which settle the contradiction of wear-resistance and toughness. This may save most of material and reduce cost. The latest studying roller is high speed steel compound roller. The experiment of high carbides and vanadium high-speed steel is carried out investigation into the compound metal roller.The effect of different amounts of K/Na-RE addition into high-speed steel (HSS) used for roller was investigated utilizing Hi-scope video microscope (HSVM) and mechanical property measurement. The results show that, with the increase of K/Na-RE addition and proper heat treatment the net of casting carbides tend to be broken up. After multiple modification, Y crystal grains have great change that the big dendritic crystals turn into small equiaxed crystals and the carbides and crystal grains of HSS are distributed homogeneously in the microstructure.Further analysis shows that with the increase of K/Na-RE addition strength, toughness, hot-hardness and resistant properties of HSS have evident improvement.
