It is very important that superoxide dismutase (SOD) has been applied in chemistry, biology and medicine. The underlying disadvantages of natural superoxide dismutase (SOD), such as short life, lower penetrability and permeability through cell membrane as a result of great molecular weight, etc., restrict its application, so low molecular weight SOD mimics is becoming an increasingly hot research topic. In this paper, the structure, the properties and the research situation of superoxide dismutase (SOD) were introduced, and the recent development of SOD, the reactive mechanism and the application were also introduced. At length the recent development of SOD was greatly recommended.Two Schiff bases were synthesized, one compound was synthesized by salicylaldehyde and 8-aminoquinoline, and the other was synthesized by salicylaldehyde and amine. With the above-mentioned bases, four manganese or iron complexes were prepared. All compounds were characterized by element analysis, IR and UV; the manganese content of the complexes were determined by Formaldehyde oxime colorimetry; the iron content of the complexes were determined by K2Gr2O7; the molar conductivity and magnetic moment of the complexes were measured; The electrochemical properties of the complexes were studied by cyclic voltammetry; The free radical inhibition rate to O2- were determined by improved pyrogallol autoxidation.From these research results, manganese or iron is five-coordinated and the ligands and C1 anion coordinate to the manganese or iron ion by the N atom of C=N donor group, the O atom of phenolic oxygen donor group and inner C1 anion; manganese or iron ion possess high spin d4 electron structure feature; all of the complexes displayed significant SOD activities and their IC50 ( the concentration of 50% inhibition ) values are equal to 1.44×10-3, 1.06×10-3, 4.7×10-5, 2.85×10-5(mmol/L). These research results show that the complexes exhibit significant inhibitive effect and may become SOD mimics. These mimics are of great important application in skin protection, health care and druggery.
