Electric tools have many different kinds of varieties, and differ in their specifications. Domestic enterprises attach more importance on imitating design in stead of systematic design method and practice. In most enterprises, for the same kind of electric tools, the parts having the same function are usually repeatedly designed, largely identical but with minor differences and not universal, thus generating low efficiency and high cost.Based on existing relevant theories of modular design, combining characteristic of electric tools, this paper, taking typical electric tool—polishing machine as a study object, study the modular design technology of electric tools for improving design efficiency and reducing processing cost, and some primary results are obtained.The study is mainly focused on three aspects: module partition, module establishment and developing of modular design system based on UG. Firstly, based on analysis of configuration, functions and clients demands of typical product, the paper adopts suitable partition method of electric tools to carry out module partition of typical product. Secondly, the paper adopts Top-Down assemblage modeling of a product combining Top-Down assemblage modeling and Bottom-Up assemblage of a module, which is then applied in assemblage modeling of typical product. Based on these, a modular design system of electric tools is studied. At last, some conclusions are made, and future work needed doing are presented too.
