The design of cigarette materials is a important tache of cigarette design ,and effects directly on the tar levels of cigarette and tar stability. At present, the design method of cigarette materials is relative single, which leads to low stabilities of the tar levels. Therefore, the application of new technology and method is urgent. In the paper, the application of robust design in controlling tar levels of mainstream smoke was presented.Firstly, the technology and method for reducing tar of cigarette were researched and overall summarized in order to offering professional foundation for the application of robust design in reducing and controlling cigarette tar.Secondly, basic theories of robust design were generalized, and the basic procedures of robust design of static character were emphasized, which provided an idea and way for the application of robust design in the design of cigarette materials. Finally, on the base of the above research and summarization, according to the basic procedures of robust design, the overall process of design were divided into three phases, i.e. system design, parameter design and tolerance design. At the same time, the design of tipping paper and filter was optimized. Through the analysis of the signal to noise ratio and sensitivity, the optimum combination scheme was ascertained ultimately. The quality and cost were counterpoised by using quality loss function, and the tolerance of materials was also ascertained in the end.The successful application of robust design in controlling tar levels of cigarette shows that the application of the technology is promising in the study of cigarette blending and making technology, the process control, and working out of the cigarette standard.
