A series of metal phthalocyanine complexes and metal tetracylpyridoporphyrin complexes, such as MPc, MTcPc, MPcTs and MPTp (M= Mn(â…¡), Fe(â…¢), Fe(â…¡), Co(â…¡), Ni(â…¡), Cu(â…¡)) and MTcaPc (M= Mn(â…¡), Fe(â…¢), Fe(â…¡), Co(â…¡), Ni(â…¡), Cu(â…¡), Ru(â…¢),Rh(â…¢),Pd(â…¡)and Ag(I )) are synthesized and characterized by IR, TGA and elemental analysis.Catalytic effect of these complexes to the lithium-thionyl chloride battery is evaluated by determining the percentage of Li/SOCl2 capacity increment under constant resistance. Some complexes, such as MPc, MTcPc, MPcTs (M= Mn(â…¡), Fe(â…¡), Co(â…¡), Ni(â…¡)), MPTp (M= Mn(â…¡), Fe(â…¢), Fe(â…¡), Co(â…¡), Ni(â…¡), Cu(â…¡)) and MTcaPc (M= Mn(â…¡), Fe(â…¢), Fe(â…¡), Co(â…¡), Ni(â…¡), Cu(â…¡), Ru(â…¢),Rh(â…¢),Pd(â…¡)and Ag(â… )) show catalytic activities for the reduction of thionyl chloride, while larger values of 60-125% have been observed. The performance of Li/SOCl2 is affected by the conjugative effect of complexes used as a catalyst. MPTp (M= Mn(â…¡), Co(â…¡), Ni(â…¡)) is the most effective.A few new viewpoints on the catalytic mechanism of the reduction of thionyl chloride by phthalocyanine complexes and metal tetracylpyridoporphyrin complexes were formed. The catalytic activity of electrochemical reduction of thionyl chloride by the complexes is due to the catalytic activity to the formation of an adduct of thionyl chloride with complexes molecule, which is affected by the structure of ligands and metal ions in the complexes.
