Liquid crystals are extremely important materials due to their extensive use in liquid crystal displays. The desire to achieve liquid crystal displays with optimal operating conditions, in a wide range of applications, has been the driving force of the research for new liquid crystalline materials over the last three decades.Aiming at getting low and wide phase transition temperature liquid crystals with simple thermal behaviour suitable for liquid crystal display, In order to achieve the good liquid crystal materials, the chiral diester-type dinesogenic having cholesteryl and 2-halogenated 4-(4-n-alkylcyclohexyl)benznate groups were designed, synthesized and characterized in this paper. And we also investigate the influence of thermal behaviours on lateral substituent, The structures and thermal phase behaviour of these dimers have been characterized by IR, ~1H NMR, elemental analysis, DSC, POM and XRD measurements. In summary, the thermal phase behaviour of these diners synthesized in our present investigation is significantly different to that of other cholesterol-based liquid crystal dimers. Some of then exhibit low and wide phase transition temperature and simple thermal behaviour. Their thermal stability is very good. Thus the diners can be used in liquid crystal display device applications, either as a single chiral component or as a chiral dopant of liquid crystal mixture.
