Formaldehyde, p-cresol were used as raw materials, first step was to synthesize 2,6-bis(hydroxymethy)p-cresol, then prepared 2,6-diformyl-4-methyl-phenol under the function of oxidant. With the aid of the Infrared Absorption Spectroscopy(IR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy(NMR), Melting Point(M.P.), X-ray Diffractometer (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM), High Pertormance Liquid Chromatogram (HPLC), etc. the structure of chemical compound synthesized was confirmed and the purity was determined. Through designing the single factor experiment and orthogonal experiment, the effects, such as reaction time, reaction temperature, solvent, oxidant, etc. were discussed and better experiment conditions of every step were confirmed. The results showed that the yield was up to 84.6%, the purity of the pruduct was up to 98.9%. The results of enlarging experiment based on laboratory indicated that the reaction condition and the route to synthesizing 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol was suitable for industrialization production.Active manganese(Ⅳ) dioxide can be used as the oxidant while preparing 2,6-diformyl-4-methyl-phenol from 2,6-bis(hydroxymethy)p-cresol, which can prevent the phenol hydroxyl from being oxidized at the time of oxidizing hydroxyl to methyl acyl. The experimental result indicated that the manganese(Ⅳ) dioxide prepared from decomposing manganese(Ⅱ) carbonate by heating had better oxidizing activation and selectivity, and the conditions were confirmed through the experiment: decomposing temperature 250℃, time 12h.
