Gears play an important role in the mechanical fields .There are many ways of machining gears and a various kinds of machines ,as a result the planning of the machining processing of the gears turn out to be especially important.The process gets more complicated partly because there are so many kinds of gears that many parameters have to be taken into consideration while machining , the other reason is that the process steps are sometimes complex , which makes it necessary to deal with a lot of related factors .so it is meaningful both theoretically and practically to establish such kind of expert system that will help to compile and check the file in terms of the parameters and the number of the parts.In order to make the gears process planning automatical and convenient, this paper mainly analyzes and summarizes the characteristics of the CAPP(Computer Aided Process Planning) expert system of gears and meanwhile weighing the advantages against disadvantages on design planning and implementing method, in view of the advantages of combining AI and ES and Prolog language technique, use expert system technique, adopt the knowledge expression and rule ratiocination based on method of generative system and make use of Visual Prolog to establish the CAPP expert system for gears process planning. This expert system adopts the generative structure and enables us to compile the original program and design the user interface within the smart environment of Visual Prolog.The system is made up of six models: the model of process searching, the model of process management, the model of typical process, the model of machines information, the model of tools information and the model of accessories. This system can simulate the whole course that technologist plans the process of gears in reality and can also work out the serial number and information of the average gears. By way of the dynamic database inside in Visual Prolog environment, it can rapidly provide information of the process according to the features of gears and the manufacturing parameters. Workers can manage the files by means of the numbers that have acquired before with the changing of machining conditions and process accordingly. Compiling the process of typical gears automatically, by using the searching mechanism of the external database and B+tree combined with the internal database. The information management of machines and tools also use the internal database. This system can achieve rapid searching and expand the database infinitely.the system can be used in different situations by the management of the database.
