Incremental in-plane bending, the strip of sheet metal beaten by an inclined punch and then bent incrementally, is a flexible and laborsaving manufacturing technology for short production runs in a variety of sizes and shapes. The strip of sheet metal is uneven compressed in width and elongated in length and becomes a ring in phase gradually. It is a free forging means of using the unequal plastic deformation creatively to obtain productions, which is flexible and energy saving, but the technology parameters are interactive intimately and it is hard to control them exactly.Machines endued with wisdom and doing more complex mental labor to help or be in stead of human, which can increase work efficiency and standard of living, is a dream of human being. Expert system is a successful approach toward intelligentized program design in conventional A.I, and is a noticeable field turning A.I into practicality. Based on the features of incremental in-plane bending and advantage of expert system dealing with problems, to research on expert system of incremental in-plane bending has very important practical meaning.In this paper, an expert system of incremental in-plane bending has been researched and developed, designing knowledge base of representation of creation regulation, reasoning system based on rules and search mechanism and explaining system based on prefabricating text. The system, making use of ADO technology, Access database and Visual Basic, develops knowledge base, database and reasoning system, and uses Matlab in numerical analyzing and graph showing. The main function of the system is in-plane bending radius estimation, forming limit estimation and forming process optimization. It also has a friendly interface and it is stable, convenient to service and easy to extend.
