The relaxor ferroelectric materials xPb(Mg1/3 Nb2/3 )O3-(1-x)PbTiO3 ( PMN-PT ) have tremendous potential for ultrasonic maging, sonar, high-performance actuators due to their outstanding properties.〈001〉oriented PMN-PT textured polycrystalline ceramics provide improved properties compared to untextured ceramics, relatively simple technology, and low processing cost compared to single crystals. Textured PMN-PT ceramics can be obtained by templated grain growth (TGG) method using〈001〉oriented SrTiO3 as template particles. Therefore, the synthesis of SrTiO3 with a tabular morphology is crucial to texture formation by TGG. In this paper, the tabular was prepared by molten salt synthesis (MSS) method on the basis of the theory of crystal growth and molten salt physics and chemistry in detail.The phase formation and morphology evolution of Sr3Ti2O7 and SrTiO3 particles for different synthesis conditions were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that tabular Sr3Ti2O7 particles were developed in molten salt by two processes: a formation process and a particle growth process, large, regularly shaped Sr3Ti2O7 particles can form with low cooling rate, suitable holding temperature and time. The tabular Sr3Ti2O7 particles with a length of 10~20μm and thickness of 1~2μm could be obtained at 1200℃for 4h with a cooling rate of 0.5℃/min and salt-to-reactants ratio of 0.5 in KCl flux. Difference of growing rate in different crystal planes lead to Sr3Ti2O7 seeds develop tabular particles. In the TiO2-Sr3Ti2O7-KCl system, SrTiO3 platelets are formed primarily through the shear transformation of Sr3Ti2O7 induced by leaching out Sr and O. KCl flux serves as the diffusion media and the reaction assistant.the hybrid template (Sr,Ba)TiO3 particles were synthesized using plate-like Sr3Ti2O7 as precursors by different mothed. The results show that regular tabular particles can be obtained by reacting Sr3Ti2O7 with 30% BaO and TiO2 in turn by molten salt synthesis.
