"Smoking and Health" has become a major problem facing China tobacco industry and the medical profession, and also the focus of widespread concern in today's society. The relativity between smoking and some illness is yet to be validated by further research now, but it is undoubted that smoking and the nocuous matter in smoke gas would bring smokers fauces illness, such as chogh and some other symptoms. So we must bear in mind the great importance of developing cigarettes with Chinese characteristics. By using Chinese Herbal Medicine to construct cigarettes with Chinese style Smoking characteristics and traditional cultural connotation of smoking cigarettes and develop Chinese characteristics brand cigarettes with increased advantages and decreased harmfulness, the competitiveness of Chinese cigarette products can be improved, which is the response to the pressures and challenges brought by WTO and WHO.State Tobacco Monopoly Bureau in the national tobacco work plan has clearly put forward that the development and application of Chinese Herbal Medicine must be used as an important means and direction of improving the competitiveness of Chinese cigarettes. In this paper, eight types of Chinese Herbal Medicine which have the effectiveness of relieving a cough were selected: Honeysuckle,HangZhou white chrysanthemum . Licorice,Radix Scutellariae,Lily . Shaddock peel,BalloonflowerRoot,Tangerine Peel, Accelerate Solvent Extraction (ASE) was used in the extraction system, and the content of the main useful ingredients were tested, simultaneous Distillation-extraction-Gas Chraomatography/Mass Spectrometry (SDE-GC / MS )was used to isolate and identify the volatile components in the extracts, cigarette combustion and cigarette burning mechanisms were modeled by Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) combined with on-line Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography-Mass spectrum (Py-GC/MS), and paralysis products of the herbal medicine extracts were analyzed, combined with the results of smoking, the research will provide a theoretical basis for the application of Chinese herbal additives in cigarettes .In the aspect of extracting the active ingredient of Chinese Herbal Medicine, ASE was adopted to replace the classic Soxhlet extraction method, thus the extraction time was greatly reduced, with less amount of solvent and high extraction efficiency. SDE-GC/MS was used for the qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis of the volatile components in these extracts. The results indicated: there were 67 main components in the extraction of Honeysuckle, the total peak area of 91%; there were 75 main components in the extraction of HangZhou white chrysanthemum, the total peak area of 65.54%; there were 108 main components in the extraction of Licorice, the total peak area of 92.21%; there were 97 main components in the extraction of Radix Scutellariae, the total peak area of 86.41%; there were 60 main components in the extraction of Lily , the total peak area of 78.70%; there were 54 main components in the extraction of Shaddock peel, the total peak area of 96.31%; there were 42 major components in the extraction of BalloonflowerRoot, the total peak area of 88.06%; there were 59 major components in the extraction of Tangerine Peel, the total peak area of 76.43%. The eight types of Chinese herbs extraction contain senior fatty acids that could alter the crude flue gas to a softer light sweet Smoking; esters could enhance and improve the smoke flavor; terpene and sesqiterpenes could improve and increase the natural flavor in tobacco, the effect of incremental aroma could give the cigarettes a special flavor.By using of TGA to select larger weight-loss points as a key pyrolysis temperature, Py-GC/MS was used to model a more comprehensive and real cigarette decomposition simulation in various stages, and analyzed pyrolysis products of the herb additives in the process of cigarette smoking and burning. Through studying on the pyrolysis products of tobacco additives in the cigarettes, we can forecast their behavior in the process of combustion, the study also explores the relation between the components of smoke and additives, provides the basic gist for effectively control of the dangers of smoking flue gas. According to the mass loss curves, we selected larger mass loss points as the temperature pyrolysis temperature. The volatile pyrolysis products of extracts of the eight Chinese Herbal Medicine were investigated by Py-GC/MS, the results indicated that a large number of aldehydes, ketones, esters and furans existed in the pyrolysis products which had the aroma characteristics such as sweet-smelling aroma, fruit aroma and tobacco aroma. Most of the pyrolysates could improve the quality of cigarettes smoking and reduce irritation, and make certain contribute to the forming of a special cigarette smoke flavor. All of the eight types of Chinese herbal additives which had been added to the cigarettes have the effect of improving the quality of cigarette aroma, reducing the irritation to nose and throat, and improving aftertaste, softening the smoking. Therefore, all of them could be used as Tobacco Flavoring. In this paper, through the analysis of the volatile components of Chinese herbal additives, the simulation and analysis of the process of cigarette burning and absorption, combined with the classic methods of smoking, we have established a set of simple and effective method that could be used to evaluate the quality of the Chinese herbal additives and will provide a theoretical significance for the application of Chinese herbal additives in cigarettes.
