Tobacco is a very complicated organic system, tobacco and smoke contain more than six thousand of chemical components according to reports. The compounds found in tobacco and smoke are not only some important tobacco aroma components, but also small amount of harmful ingredients.Pyrolysis combined with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry has been applied usefully to study the behavior of combustion of cigarette. And also flash evaporation combined with gas chromatography is suitable for the analyzing of volatile compound. In this paper, pyrolysis gas chromatography/mass spectrometry was used for analyzing the compounds in cigarette. The main achievemnts obtained in this research were as follows. In the first chapter, the study history, the class of compounds in cigarette, the analysis methods for tobacco and smoke, and the advantage and shorage for the Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry were briefly described. Then, application of this method to analysis of aroma componentsa and harmful ingredients in cigarette were discussed. In chapter 2,experimental instrument and reagents were introduced, and operational conditions of the instrument were also described. In chapter 3,a method of flash evaporation followed by gas chromatography(FE-GC)was established for the simultaneous determination of 1,2-propylene glycol, glycerol and triethylene glycol in cigarette filler by using 1,4-butanediol as an internal standard, and eight samples of cigarette filler were analyzed. The method showed good linearity over a concentration range of 25-2000 mg/L for 1,2-propylene glycol and triethylene glycol, and 100-4000 mg/L for glycerol with good correlation coefficients. The limits of detection(LOD)of these three substances were 0.93 mg/L,37.50 mg/L and 4.68 mg/L,respectively.The recoveries were ranged from 94.7 % to 100.3 %.In chapter 4,the pyrolysis of cigarette fillers were investigated by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry at three typical temperature levels of 300?,500? and 800?,respectively.A variety of aroma compounds were generated which play an important role on cigarette with better aroma and taste. The results showed that the classes of pyrolysis products at 300? were less than 500?.At the same time, the type and amount of aldehydes, ketones and heterocyclics were significantly increased at 500?.Most of aromatic hydrocarbons were detected at 800? such as benzene, toluene and naphthalene, etc. In chapter 5,a method of pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry was established for the simultaneous determination of toluene? m-xylene and naphthalene released from cigarette filler at 300??500?and 800?.The method showed good linearity over a concentration range of 20-2000 mg/L for toluene and m-xylene,and 10-1000 mg/L for naphthalene with good correlation coefficients. The limits of detection(LOD)of these three substances were 0.20 mg/L,0.25 mg/L and 0.10 mg/L,respectively.The recoveries were ranged from 89.5 % to 95.8%.In the last chapter, the main results obtained from this research were summarized. Then, the problems to be considered for this research and the possible future trends in this fileld were also discussed.
