With the growth of demand for oil and the drilling technology continues to improving, in order to increase the oil output, Opening windows and side drilling in the vertical well, drilling cement plug after well cementing are all operated in the casing. So it must use Small-caliber drill pipe specifically. There are three domestic companies produce oil drill pipe that caliber is above 5 ".The drill pipe which diameter is smaller than 5" are all relied on imports. Therefore, it will reduce the cost of oil well and solve the small-caliber drill pipe domestically problem to developing a small-caliber drill pipe automation production line in China. The Small-caliber drill pipe is composed of three parts: the pipe body, inside thread joints and outside thread joints. The pipe body is qualified component bought outsourcing, it not used to be processed, only the two end surface of the pipe body are required being turned. The two joints are required processing too. The specific technical process include raw material transmission ,turning two end surface, friction welding, annealing, turning two welded joint, quenching and tempering, internal and external welded joint polishing, Magnetic powder testing, ultrasonic testing and the product conveying.This paper completed the quenching and tempering process of the Small-caliber drill pipe automatic production line, it include the mechanical main body design, hydraulic systems design, electrical control and PLC control system design. The Small-caliber drill pipe automatic production line has met the drill pipe's (diameter from 2(3/8)" to 5" , length from 9.5 meter to 12 meter) production and transmission, and it has all met the demand of 5min/pieces work mete.
