A novel water soluble fluorescent monomer,dimethyl aminopropyl methacrylamide-1-chloromethyl naphthalene quaternary ammonium salt(DMAPMA-1-CMN) was synthesized firstly by using methyl methacrylate and N,N-dimethyl-1,3-propane diamine. The structure of the product was characterized by HPLC,IR,1H NMR and MS.The optimum reaction conditions were obtained by experiments.Fluorescence properties of the monomer were studied.The excited and the emitted wavelength of the monomer was 349 nm and 399 nm respectively.The fluorescence quantum efficiency was 0.61.The calibration curve for the determination of monomer was linear over the range 1 mg·L-1-8 mg·L-1,the limit of detection was 4.8×10-2mg·L-1.DMAPMA-1-CMN/AM/AMPS was prepared by copolymerization of fluorescence monomer,acrylic amide(AM)and 2 -acrylamido- 2 -methyl-propanesulfonic acid(AMPS). The optimum reaction condition for the copolymer was worked out.The UV and the lowest detection limit of DMAPMA-1-CMN/AM/AMPS were studied.The results showed:Being tagged with DMAPMA-1-CMN/AM/AMPS,the chromophoric group of the fluorescent monomer had no change.Furthermore,the calibration curve for the determination of the copolymer was linear over the range 1 mg·L-1-8 mg·L-1,the limit of detection was 0.62 mg·L-1. By treating Kaolin suspension medium,the DMAPMA-1-CMN/AM/AMPS as the flocculant used along with inorganic flocculant PAC had good flocculation performance.When the addition of PAC was 12 mg·L-1and the addition of P(DMAPMA-1-CMN/AM/AMPS)was 1.2 mg·L-1,the transmission of supernatant fluid could reach 87.2%.
