As the preferred hair styling polymer, poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) has the excellent solubility, biocompatibility and film-forming property. However, the application of PVP are quite limited by the shortcomings of single function, frangibility and poor humidity resistance. Especially, with the increasing emphasis on environmental, performance and functionality of hair styling polymer, PVP homopolymer can not meet consumer`s demand. Therefore, the study on high performance and multi-functional copolymerization modification of PVP has a broad market prospect and practical significance. The main research content and related achievement are as follows:First of all, random PVP / DMAPMA copolymer was synthesized vis solution radical polymerization method and was characterized by fourier transform infrared(FTIR) and 1H NMR analytical instruments. In order to solve the problem of copolymer composition heterogeneity sourcing from dimethylamino propyl methacrylamide (DMAPMA) strong homopolymerization tendency, the copolymerization kinetics, copolymer composition distribution and application performance study on subsequent feeding and continuous feeding method in the sample and the medium size conditions have been carried out by chemical iodometric method and UV spectrophotometry. The results indicated that the control effect of continuous feeding method to copolymerization kinetics, copolymer composition distribution and application performance was significantly better than the subsequent feeding method, especially in the media size condition.Moreover, the presence of copolymer cross-linked structure was confirmed by FTIR, TG and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) characterization , while using methylene bisacrylamide(MBA), N-vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) and DMAPMA as monomers to prepare hydrogel copolymer. By systematic research to the copolymer solution behavior, transparency, mechanical properties and styling properties, the conclusion can be well obtained that the hydrogel copolymer have a series of advantages, such as solution self-thickening, good stability of apparent viscosity to pH value, good film toughness and excllent styling performance .Finally, while the terpolymer PVP/DMAPMA/VM was prepared by using NVP, DMAPMA and vinyl dimethyl siloxane (VM) as monomers with the solution - precipitation copolymerization, the structure and film morphology of terpolymer were characterized by and FTIR and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). At the same time, the copolymerization conditions and application performance were also studied. It was found that the choice and amount of solvent combined with reaction temperature have become the most significant factor to the reaction conversion and molecular weight of copolymer. This terpolymer possess excellent film toughness, easy combing and luster properties , which can endue hair to the effect of bright supple and elegant.
