Currently, the high economic growth in china depends on the dramatic consumption of the material resources and energy to great extent, which is a kind of extensive economic growth mode and inevitably encounters the restriction of population, resources, energy, and the pressure of the environment, faces the "bottleneck" of the limited resources. The authorities should pay much attention on how to change the traditional extensive economic development mode according to the scientific development conception to develop the low expenditure mode in accord with sustainable development, and to let our society and economy step into a benign circulation to make the economic growth can obey the rule of environment, also to accomplish sustainable development based on resources and environmental capacity.Ecological footprint and ecological deficit in Fuzhou City in recent 6 years are calculated in the paper by means of the basic theories of ecological footprint model and its calculation method. The purpose of this dissertation is to evaluate and measure the situation and extent of the sustainable development in the city ecological construction in Fuzhou City to provide the basis in establishing the policy of ecological city and in promoting sustainable development. The analyses and calculation of ecological footprint from 2000 to 2005 in Fuzhou City indicate that ecological footprint per capita increased from 1.1772 hm~2 in 2000 to 1.5920 hm~2 in 2005, 52.86% increased during the recent 6 years. Nevertheless, there is a little bit decreased ecological capacity per capita during the same period. The ecological deficit tends to increase gradually annually, while the ecological print of ten thousand Yuan GDP presents degenerative trend but fluctuates.Trough analyzing the change of the ecological deficit of Fuzhou City and discussing the feasible approach to the construction of ecological city, The related suggestions are put forward, such as the population control, improvement of biology yield per unit of land, and adoption of new production technique, such as recycling, energy-saving technologies to improve the exploitation of resources.
