Oxidation of special functional amino acids(L-glutamine and sarcosine) and a-diols by bis(hydrogenperiodato)argentite(Ⅲ) complex anion ([Ag(HIO6)2]5-) have been carried out. Oxidation products have been identified and characterized by chemical methods and mass spectrometry. The oxidation kinetics is followed by conventional spectrophotometry in alkaline medium over a range of temperature. Through analysis of the oxidation products and kinetic data, coherent and consistent mechanistic pictures have been depicted. In an alkaline medium, the oxidation reaction displays an overall second-order kinetics: first-order to both Ag(Ⅲ) and Gln, respectively. The observed second-order rate constants (k'), decreasing with increasing [IO4-]tot and increasing with increasing the ionic strength, are virtually invariable with the variation of [OH-].In an alkaline medium, oxidation of a-diols, namely ethyl ene glycol,1,2-propanediol, and 1,2-butanediol, by [Ag(HIO6)2]5- is kinetically first-order with respect to the Ag(Ⅲ) complex kobs=kx[α-diol]+ky[α-diol]2...
