Graphene is a two dimensional material with hexagonal crystal lattice. As basic consist of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene shares many similar properties with CNTs, such as good thermal conductivity, and excellent electrical conductivity. Moreover, the little thickness (at about 1nm) makes the graphene high aspect ratio (ratio of lateral size to thickness), which may make it competent for field emission. In this thesis, the investigation focuses on the preparation and the basic modification mechanisms of graphene. Then the preparation and application are explored and investigated for graphene. The main results are as follows:1. The mechanism and process of the graphene preparation are investigated, and modified the method to prepare the graphene oxide more oxidized and stable.2. Comparing the different process for free-standing graphene paper, and modified the preparation method. The effects of graphene oxide reuduction are studied in detail and the relative mechanisms are discussed.3. Field emission behavior of the free-standing graphene paper is investigated, and the emission mechanisms are discussed.4. Surface modification of free-standing graphene paper has been taken by plasma. Different experimental parameter has been compared and discussed. And the mechanism of the field emission enhancement after plasma treatment has been studied.5. Hydrophobic properties of graphene paper and the post-treated one are both studied.6. Wedge field emission of curled graphene paper has been studied.7. Carbon nanotubes has been grown on the flexible free-standing graphene paper, and the field emission properties has also been studied.
