Flocculation is a common and important link in water treatment in a long time. A large number of scholars have done a lot of in-depth study on flocculation mechanism and technology methods. But the study of internal growth process of flocculation body is relatively weak.In recent years, fractal theory begins to develop rapidly. It mainly reveals the unity of order and disorder, uncertainty and randomness in the non-linear system. So we can explore this complex process and understand the underlying regularity. In the flocculation process, the flocculation body's growth process is random. But it has nonlinear characteristics. It is the process of the small particles grows into large groups. So the internal and external parts of the flocculant have very irregular and self-similarity. We can use fractal theory to study the effect of flocculation.In this paper, we use printing and dyeing wastewater as raw water. Taking pDMC-DMAEMA,pDMDAAC-FA as medicaments, through the flocculation experiments in different factor of added-quantity and reaction pH value. We can calculate the fractal dimension. So we can determined out of the best added-quantity and best reaction pH value of two kinds of flocculants.(1)In different added-quantity, the fractal dimension of flocculation body applying pDMC-DMAEMA as medicament varied from 1.2548~1.5234. The fractal dimension of flocculation body applying pDMDAAC-FA as medicament varied from 1.3470~1.5844. In different reaction pH value, the fractal dimension of flocculation body applying pDMC-DMAEMA as medicament varied from 1.4225~1.6009. The fractal dimension of flocculation body applying pDMDAAC-FA as medicament varied from 1.4613~1.6541.(2)When added-quantity is small, two kinds of flocculants have shown a smaller fractal dimension. With the added-quantity increased, fractal dimension begins to increase. When reaches a certain lever, it gradually decreased. For pDMC-DMAEMA, the best added-quantity is 140mg/L, its fractal dimension is 1.5234. For pDMDAAC-FA, the best added-quantity is 120mg/L, its fractal dimension is 1.5844.(3)In different reaction pH value, when reaction pH value is too small or too large, fractal dimension for pDMC-DMAEMA is small. When reaction pH value is 7, the fractal dimension is the largest 1.6009. For pDMDAAC-FA, it has the largest fractal dimension 1.6541 at the pH value is 7 too. But it also has good fractal dimensions at other pH value.Through determination and calculation of the fractal dimensions, it is shows that fractal dimensions can be used to analyzed flocculation body. In the actual production, we can use the detection of flocculation body fractal dimensions to analyze flocculation extent and flocculation treatment effects. This method is direct and obvious. Fractal theory applies to study the effect of polymer flocculant. Fractal dimensions show a good correlation with the various parameters. Fractal dimension can be the parameter to analysis of flocculation and it can give guidance on the flocculation conditions in the actual production.
