In recent years, with wide application of the high-filled culvert in mountains regions, the diseases of the culvert gradually increased, therefore it was a desperate need to compute and analyze vertical earth pressure on the top of the culvert accurately. The variation law of the vertical earth pressure on the culvert was not accurately reflected by linear earth pressure theory in prevailing Chinese General Code for Design of Highway Bridges and Culverts, the results calculated by the method in the code were different from the field test results.Aiming at this problem, this paper based on field tests, the numerical simulation and theoretical analysis which studied the high-filled culvert's nonlinear earth pressure distribution and variation law under the conditi-on of reinforced and unreinforced embankment, and discussed the factors which impacted on the vertical earth pressure on the top of culverts, such as the filling height, filling properties, pebble modulus, the main research results were as follows:1.Field test and numerical simulation showed that when filling height reach to a certain value, vertical earth pressure on the top of culverts increased nonlinearly with increase of filling height, the vertical earth pressure of the culverts was larger in practice than in theory.2.Under the condition of reinforced and unreinforced embankment, field test and numerical simulation showed that when filling height reach to a certain value, the earth pressure was larger than theoretical value(σ=γH)obviously,so theoretical value was not safe for the high-filled culverts.3. earth pressure on the top of culvert varied obviously by changing filled soil density and pebble modulus. So if you wanted to reduce vertical earth pressure on the top of culvert, you could achieve expected results by changing these factors.
