Relative bridges, embankment culvert as highway intersecting channels with river and ditches has the advantage of simple construction, saving the engineering cost, is used more often in practical engineering in recent years. However, due to home and abroad culvert structure design especially the calculation theory and methods of the vertical earth pressure are not entirely consistent, there are some overly conservative leading to diseconomy or unreasonable structural form selection leading to cracking or even collapse, have seriously affect the culvert in the normal use of highway engineering. In order to ensure reasonable design and normal use of the culvert, the paper used the theoretical analysis, field test and numerical simulation methods etc, the vertical earth pressure distribution on embankment culvert are studied, obtain some regularity understanding, specific content as follows:Firstly, through the analysis of the embankment culvert research status and development trends at home and abroad, identified the culvert upper vertical earth pressure distribution characteristics, the paper based on professor Zeng Guoxi modified Marston formula, considering the deflection of the cover under the effect of filling pressure, re-derivation slab culvert vertical earth pressure distribution calculation formula, the modified formula can consider the interaction between embankment fill and slab culvert.Secondly, the paper rely on the practical engineering of Heda Highway from Huanren (Xinkailing) to Dandong (contract section 13), through buried soil pressure gauge at the top and side department of the slab culvert, measured the earth pressure at different fill height, get the earth pressure of the upper culvert points and have a comparative analysis with soil column theory and the modified formula, once again prove the applicability of this modified formula. Finally, by model building with the use of general finite element analysis software ABAQUS, the paper have a verification between numerical simulation and actual test results, analysis the vertical earth pressure distribution of the culvert structure at the top, discuss the vertical earth pressure distribution under the effect of boundary conditions, packing bulk density, culvert span, structure form and fill height etc, obtain the fill culvert vertical earth pressure distribution characteristics and laws under different conditions. In addition, combined with the engineering examples, compare the results of field testing with the results of numerical simulation. The results show that the numerical simulation in good accord with field test results. Therefore, the finite element analysis as the research of embankment culvert earth pressure distribution is feasible.
