Tailing dam, is a special kind of industrial buildings, which is one of the three control projects of mine. Its operations not only directly affects the economic benefits of mining enterprise itself, but also is closely related to the lives and properties of nearby residents and natural environment. The evaluation of tailings dam's stability is the key to the safe operation of tailings. Based on the study of overall stability of tailing dam by different analytical methods and combined with engineering practices, this paper conducts the planning and design of new tailings dam. This research has high academic value and important economic and social significance. The main conclusions of this work are as follows:(1) The common mode of tailing dam failure and factors affecting the general stability of tailing dam are summarized and analyzed by literature research, and the geotechnical engineering properties of tailing dam and the analytical methods to evaluate present stability of tailing dam are reviewed as well.(2) The detailed engineering design process and content are elaborated by taking Wong Nai Au tailing project as example. A number of program designs and specific measures are also proposed to consider special cases that may be encountered.(3) Based on the principles of Janbu method, the analytical methods for searching the critical surfaces of two-dimensional tailing dam are proposed through using random angle to generate random sliding surface, and a more consistent stability of engineering analysis is obtained. (4) The stability analysis of slope in typical section of new tailing dam is analyzed by using strength reduction technique. The results of strength reduction method are compared and analyzed with the ones of standardized and limit equilibrium theories in order to discuss the respective advantages and disadvantages of these three different analytical methods, and reasonable methods to analyze the slope stability of tailing dam are proposed.(5) On the basis of field data, literature research, theoretical analysis and numerical results, the engineering characteristics and problems in the tailing dam in China are analyzed and summarized. A preliminary design for safety monitoring and safety management of Wong Au tailings (dam) is available.
