"Life consists in sport". One can never enjoy his life without sport, for it is an important criterion of the quality of human life, as well as human nature. With the quickening up of China's urbanization and the heightening of living standards, the awareness of healthy life has been gradually arising in urban residents, bringing accordingly forward more requests for communal fitness and entertainment facilities. However, the fitness and entertainment space, up to now, has just accounted for a small proportion of the whole residential area planning system, which is nowhere near enough. Therefore, to solve the problems of lacking researches into fitness and entertainment space, both theoretically and practically, becomes the entry point of this paper.From the perspective of the Design Art, this paper is based on the understanding of the outdoor fitness and entertainment space environment design, aiming to explore its basic principles and exterior expression by the exemplification of the urban communal outdoor fitness and entertainment facilities in Wuhan.This paper contains three parts. Part I is theoretical study, which, starting with several concepts of the residential fitness and entertainment space environment, researches into its characteristics and relevant behavioral needs. Part II is field research, which studies the urban residential fitness and entertainment space environment in Wuhan with the subjective status of humanity taken into consideration. Part III is design research, which focuses on the design issues of urban residential fitness and entertainment space environment, attempting to put forward design methods of fitness and entertainment space, meeting the entertainment needs of dwellers and bringing visual enjoyment to them.
