Because of the properties of bess and the infiltration of water, the subgrade of highway built in Loess District lies in many problems to be solved urgently, one of which is the subgrade settlement of the highway. This paper masters the research situations and the new developments of home and abroad about this problem according to lots of international documents. And through extensive investigations, statistic, theoretic analysis, tests and experiments, this paper systemly studies the distributed law and emerge mechanism about the subgrade settlement. By studying the relationship between the matrix suctions of unsaturated soil and the water content between the matrix suctions of unsaturated soil and the engineering properties indexes 昽f unsaturated soil, this paper introduces the matrix suction into highway engineering directly. As a fundamental research program about the infiltration law of the accumulated water of irrigation in bess District, our theory can provide the effective guide on theory for the measure in the subgrade settlement preventing. Thoroughly, We can know the preventive measures and the harness measures about the subgrade settlement, according to the analysis about the factors of the emerge of subgrade settlement.
