Based on the actua1 project--analysis and calculation of the maintransformer for the SS7 type electric locomotive, this paper analysesrelevant problems which deserve attention while designing the maintransfOrmer of an electric locomotive with AC-DC transmission,anddissertates in detail the structure of the tractive transformer of thelocomotive and reasons why the shell type structure is adopted forthe transformer. Then, after summarizing different methods forcalculating short-circuit impedance, a new method which combinesthe equivalent circuit lnodel and tl1e FEM(Finite Element Method) isput forward to calculate the parameters sucl1 as the Thevenin'sequivalent potential and impeda11ce under different workingconditions. The result enables tl1e designers with the locomotivefactory to conduct design refinement. And tl1e method, proved byexperiment, is correct and effective.
