In this paper, the cutting pattern methods of membrane structures currently used are summarized, and the critical problems in the membrane structure cutting pattern generation are analyzed. A series of analyzing methods for releasing the prestressing forces in membrane structures, determining the seam layout, and developing the curved surface to plane surface are presented.After a detailed analysis on the nature of the releasing the prestressing forces in membrane structures, a new idea using dynamic method to solve above problem is presented. Non-linear dynamic finite element method is derived, and the ways to solve the non-linear dynamic equations are discussed. The corresponding computer program with some calculating examples on releasing the prestressing forces are worked out.A simple way to simulate the curved surface is presented in the paper and can be applied to the simulation of curved surface of membrane structures. Based on this method, the dynamic relaxation method is used to determine the geodesic lines between two points on the curved surface. The corresponding computer program is worked out and some calculating examples are given. The calculating examples show that the method to simulate the curved surface is simple and has a good applicability, the dynamic relaxation method to calculate the geodesic line on the curved surface is highly practical and has high precision.By summarizing the methods used before, the minimum strain energy theory is used as the criterion to develop curved surface to plane surface. The process of developing curved surface is analyzed in the paper, which is used as the basis of a computer program. The results of the calculating examples show that this method is accurate when the curved surface is developable, and has high precision when the curved surface is undevelopable.
