Based on the investigation of the designing stilling basin, the Designing Stilling Basin Expert System has been developed. Many computer techniques, such as expert system technique, database technique, image-manipulation technique, have been integrated into the system. The expression method of knowledge and the inference machine, which are the most important parts of the system, have been studied, and the overall frame of the system has been designed.Firstly, according to the characteristics of the relative knowledge during the course of designing stilling basin, a new expression method of knowledge -Object-Oriented Expression Method has been designed after many usual expression methods of knowledge has been analyzed and compared with.Secondly, in order to efficiently use the knowledge and improve the believable degree of the system, the Object-Oriented Inference Method matched with the Object-Oriented Expression Method has been given. The inference method can comprehensively deal with the different objects and the different knowledge and improve the efficiencies of inference.On the basis of above According to the concrete characteristics of designing stilling basin, the overall frame of the Designing Stilling Basin Expert System has been designed and C++ Builder 5.5 has been selected as the environment of developing the expert system. Additionally, the design, the organization and the saving method about knowledge-base, database, model-base, and picture-base have been discussed. Based on these, the cooperation and the method of transferring message among them have been introduced.Accessing the data, the knowledge, the model and the relative parameter from database, knowledge-base, model-base and the interface, the expert system automatically infers and calculates the maximum depth and length of stilling basin The Bantai hydraulic project and the Xiangyanghe dam have been given as the example.
