With the development of the stealth cruise missile, airplane-borne stand-off missile fired from out of defense area, air-breathing missile and waverider, the aerodynamic figuration of the non-circular cross section missile bodies must be thought better of. Non-circular cross section missile has many merits, such as the better characteristic of radar stealth, higher lift-drag ration, being fit for air-breathing missile overall arrangement, convenient for storing, transporting and being fired from armored box launch containers.For circular cross section missile, the prediction methods of aerodynamic characteristic have been well developed. Because the aerodynamic characteristic of the non-circular cross section missile is different from that of circular cross section missile, the prediction methods of aerodynamic characteristic for circular cross section missile can not be used for the non-circular cross section missile. Now the prediction methods for the non-circular cross section missile have not been developed in our country.In this paper, the aerodynamic characteristic of the non-circular cross section missile has been analyzed and studied by the linearized theory and the small disturbance slender-body theory, the concept of the cross section shape coefficient has been founded, the relation between the aerodynamic normal force of bodies with arbitrary cross section shape and their cross section shape coefficient has also been studied. Then, the methods for calculating alone body aerodynamic force and wing-body interference factors of the arbitrary non-circular cross section missile are established. In the end, the aerodynamic characteristic prediction method for the non-circular cross section missile is developed. Results predicted by this method are compared with experimental data and the accuracy of this method is found to be very good within the constraints of slender body theory. This method can quickly and accurately provide aerodynamic force coefficient for percept and preliminary design of the non-circular cross section missile.
