Tailings dam is the important production establishment, there is much tailings and water in the dam. Unexpected accidents would be caused by tailings and water in a way of debris flow due to dam failure, so safety of tailings dam affects not only the normal mine production, but also the safety of people lives and properties in the downstream.Among the factors affecting the safety of tailings dam, seepage field is one of the most important. In this paper through the numerical calculation with finite element method, the seepage face of Gongchangling tailings dam is obtained and compared with the experiment result. And dealing with bifurcate terrain and reducing data input in the numerical calculation are emphasized. At result numerical disposal method solving thebifurcate terrain are put forward. At the same time, through tailings dam sections being reduced to a base section, based on the primary and secondary arrangement sequence, the influences of tailings dam seepage coefficient ratio, dry length, upstream batter, downstream batter and seepage coefficient reduced in the outlet are discussed qualitatively. So in the last of paper, ideas are suggested that all kinds of factors being able to reduce the seepage face should be considered so as to design appropriate dam shape and drainage in the antecedent design. The locality of waste residue placed should be controlled so as to compose appropriate seepage coefficient ratio and placing technics should be improved in the course of construction. And the dry length should be controlled so as to confine the altitude of seepage line in the run of tailings dam, and evening management on tailings dam should be intensified for valid drainage.
