In this thesis, the following contents about the analysis and design of the circular reinforced concrete culvert buried in the highway have been studied.1. The comparative study of the current methods used in several Chinese codes for different specialities such as highway bridge design code, hydraulic engineering design code and water supply and sewerage code, American highway bridge design code and Canadian highway bridge design code has been carried out. What's more, the corresponding evaluation has been reached.2. The earth pressure around the pipe culvert under embankment has been measured by use of field test. The conclusion that rigid base is favorable to the culvert has been drawn from the measured results of the bearing reaction. The comparative research of the measured results of the stress and the calculated results of the stress using the methods of the codes has been carried out.3. Considered the interaction of soil and structure, the finite element analysis of the soil-culvert system has been completed by use of the general analytic program-ANSYS in this paper. Based on the results of parametric analysis, the empirical formulations about the vertical earth pressure acted on culvert under embankment and about the internal force in the culvert have been put forward. It is indicated that the empirical formulations are rational and feasible by means of the comparison with the results from the codes and from the test.4. The conclusion that the current general design in Chinese highway bridge code about reinforced concrete pipe don't fit for buried culvert in highway has been drawn from the comparison of the bearing capacity with its load effect. Based on the analysis of factors to the bearing capacity of the culverts, enlarging the thickness of culvert wall can strengthen its bearing capacity more effectively.
