Nowadays various cultures incline to integrate globally and become unitary progressively. The author is trying to prove the practical values and find approaches of developing architecture with Chinese characteristics, so as to maintain the Chinese cultural independent status. Because of some distinguished aspects of Chinese traditional culture as comprehensiveness, integrity , with the concerns on the existing problems, such as formalism, in Chinese contemporary interior design research andpractices, the author initially intends to set up a suitable theoretical framework------"integrated context with tradition", so as to restudy Chinese traditional architecture precisely. From the new viewpoint, the underlying expressional structure with the symbolic character of Chinese architecture can be explored, and its prominent connotation can hopefully be apprehended more broadly and deeply.By the means of the review of the history of the western interior design, the author highlights the influence that the western traditional culture has on the modern formalistic style. Through the appraisal of the western diversified design styles and design methods, from the macro view with the aesthetic angle, it is expected that the intersection between the western and Chinese upholstery development can be found. Based on the conclusion in the paper, the theory of the modern interior design that steeped in "integrated context with tradition" can therefore be justified.According to the present situation of modern Chinese upholstery, in order to meet the newly need arising from residential interior design, the author deals with the subject through three aspects, which are economy, environment and humanities mental state. An effort is made to explore the forms and practical signification of the modern interior design that steeped in "integrated context with tradition" through analyses of practical cases. Against the background of the diversified structure of the world, some prospects are given about the future of Chinese interior design.
