Earthquake is one of the serious disaster threatening human being's life and belongings. In civil engineering, the most progressive measure to alleviate the affection is structural control. Structural control can be classified as follows: active control, passive control, semi-active control and hybrid control. The idea of passive control is to utilize additional facility within a structure to dissipate or absorb a large portion of the seismic energy, which has been applied to practical engineering extensively since its control devices-dampers are convenient and it does not need large energy supply and the structural system identification. Now the main devices which have been developed in the passive control may be grouped into the following types: viscous, visco-elastic, metallic and frictional, and tuned mass damper(TMD) and tuned liquid damper(TLD). Comparing with passive control, active control is more complicated and it need large amount of energy, although its performance is better than other control methods in theory. Semi-active control is a new control method that its control rely on the structural responses or external disturbances, and its control devices can change working status to adapt the vary loads comparing with passive control. And it does not need the large amount of external energy supply. Now the semi-active structural control becomes the most promising control method. After analyzing State-of-the-Art of active and semi-active structural control in the world, the dissertation focus on semi-active structural control based on the Magneto-rheological dampers. And a semi-active control method is put forward, which is based on LQ(linear quadratic) optimum control theory, and imitates the optimum active-control force with bound value to control the structural response. Then two structural models' simulation is conducted to compare the effectiveness and usefulness of the semi-active control with the passive control, and present the normed criteria to analysis the results.
